Problem Identification

My strategy here was to essentially understand user problems with existing popular applications of the same domain, through competitive analysis and user interviews. Then design a flow and components addressing those exact problems for the initial launch version of the application.

Identification Result

Post user research, the primary problems that I discovered with applications of the domain were that the users felt unnatural navigating through most existing apps, due to the vertical swipe memory they are habituated to from the use of social media applications. And, usability discomfort with the profile view where the user can only like from the photo view, and the photo view doesn’t hold the right information to make a decision in a snap, and certain other issues with the flow of the photo and details view.

Solution & User Flow

My approach to achieving that was the use of more familiar vertical navigation gestures throughout the design flow, with a side swipe to access the user details card, and a vertical swipe to like or unlike from either photo or details page, while the photo page only giving a peek into the bio and important details. This cut down the amount of time spent on each profile while still keeping the profile transitions familiar to use. This integrated with the below flow, produced the most efficient user experience I could come up with.

Result

The result is an efficate solution that directly addresses the accessibility issues users faced with other dating apps, while still keeping the whole app design subtly cute and pleasurable.
